"a small Christmas tree in front of a burning fireplace " Should a fire issue pop-up during this holiday season, SERVPRO of Northeast Charlotte will be on call ready to assist.

It’s already time to celebrate the holidays again this year! With all of the cookie baking, decorations, twinkly lights and hot cocoa, it’s no wonder why this season is a favorite for so many people.

While you are busy celebrating and enjoying time with family, it’s also important to reinforce your fire safety measures. This time of year brings an increase in house fires, so you need to stay vigilant.

Fire-Safe Decorating

Decorating your home in all of the holiday colors and lights can make your spaces so cozy, but be careful! Many decorations are flammable, and decorations are actually responsible for about 790 structural fires every year.

Traditions like hanging stockings over the fireplace can be beautiful, but also a fire hazard. Even just a small spark can start a fire and ruin your memories (and your home). Consider hanging them to the side of the fireplace, or make sure they aren’t hung too close to any flames.

If you are a “real tree” family, make sure that the tree you choose from the lot or cut down is fresh and not dehydrated. A dehydrated tree or tree that is dropping dried needles can be a fire risk. Keep your tree watered daily and clean up any pine needles right away. Any lights should also be unplugged at the end of every night.

Other Hazards to Watch For

If candles are involved in your family traditions or if you just like the ambiance they bring, light them carefully. Candles are a common cause of house fires and should be respected at all times.

Only light them when someone is nearby to keep an eye on them, and always extinguish them when you leave the room.

Having lights on your home or decorations in your yard is a classic holiday tradition as well. Just make sure that the lights or décor you choose are tagged for outdoor use and can withstand the elements. Also, only use the approved hooks to hang them and never pierce the wiring with nails or staples.

Once you do your part in reducing fire risk, make sure you take the time to relax and enjoy all that the Charlotte area has to offer this season. Add a stroll through the Christmas Village to your calendar or plan a family day sledding at Cordelia Park!

While you are busy enjoying the holidays, know that the team at SERVPRO of Northeast Charlotte is ready and waiting to respond to your call for help. If you do suffer fire damage, call us right away and we will be there!
